On October 23rd, , the first greatest hits album, The Hits: Chapter One was released, containing one original track, " Drowning ". Despite being a greatest hits album, the album would do extremely well, selling nearly 6 million copies worldwide.
Most of the group wanted to leave their management company, The Firm, but Nick wanted to stay to manage his solo career. Nick would release his first solo album, Now or Never on October 29th, Rumors of a possible breakup ran rampant, especially with many of the other groups they competed with breaking up around the same time, but the group assured people they were not breaking up any time soon.
The other members showed up to support him, the first major time they'd appeared together in almost 2 years. Following this, the group would begin to settle their conflicts and start planning for the next album. The group would begin recording for the next album in January , as well as embark on a small tour, performing in Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Manila and later Mexico City and Monterrey in September, performing some of the songs from the upcoming album.
Never Gone would be released on June 14, Never Gone had a very different style from the previous albums, only featuring live instruments. While successful, selling 3 million copies worldwide, the album was criticized for being too different from the previous albums.
This would end up being the last tour with Kevin, who would announce he would leave the group on June 23rd to "pursue other interests", revealed in to be raising a family [19].
The group announced they had no plans to replace him [20] , and they would continue as a quartet. Only two days after Kevin's departure, the group went back into the studio to record for their next album, titled Unbreakable.
Unbreakable would be released on October 30th, and featured much of the same style as Never Gone. The Backstreet Boys would embark on a tour to promote the album, the Unbreakable Tour , on February 16th, Kevin would even join the group for one show at the Palladium in Hollywood.
In between the release and the tour, Howie married Leigh Boniello on December 8th, Unfortunately, Brian would contract swine flu in early October and would have to cancel appearances to promote the album. On June 19th, , at a concert at the Radio City Music Hall, the Backstreet Boys made a surprise appearance with the group, spurring rumors of a possible supergroup.
The Backstreet Boys would be joined by Kevin on an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show on October 22nd, , and he would perform with his former band mates later that day. On December 10th, the group would set sail on the first Backstreet Boys Cruise.
The Backstreet Boys Cruise would happen semi annually from to , and it is possible they will continue in the future. On December 17th, A. Kevin Richardson is the oldest member of the group, and also a cousin of his bandmate Brian Littrell. Kevin was the fourth member to join the group, and thanks to him, brought on Brian as well.
Kevin also grew up with music in his life, and even moved to Orlando to pursue his dreams of performing. At night he would concentrate more on his music until the Backstreet Boys came calling. Aaron has had his own fair share of trouble , however, Nick had to take out a restraining order on Aaron as he threatened to kill Nick's pregnant wife. He's suffered from a lot of health issues, specifically with his heart, and even had to have surgery. Brian got married to his wife Leighanne Littrell in and the couple welcomed their son, Baylee, two years later in Apparently, Baylee gets his talents from his father, as he's trying to make his own impact in the music world just like Brian. Baylee, along with a lot of help and support from his father, has released his own country music album. When the Backstreet Boys took some time off, Howie worked on some of his own solo music.
He also dabbled in a little bit of acting and started his own real estate business. Due to years of their international and domestic success, the band released a documentary titled, Backstreet Boys: Show 'Em What You're Made Of ,that chronicled their career and rise to fame.
Richardson was living in Kentucky but relocated to Orlando in where he worked at Walt Disney World. A coworker from the theme park introduced him to Carter, Dorough, and McLean and all four decided to let Richardson in their group. Littrell, who is cousins with Richardson, eventually joined the band in after record producer Lou Perlman placed an ad in the Orlando Sentinel to compose a vocal group.
