Why hashtags in excel

I found this issue in Excel For a cell with text comments but widening the column was not the solution, instead I had to change the cell formatting type from Text to General. So it IS there! But when i click outside that cell, all i see again are the hash tags. What is going on here, and how can i get the data to be seen in the cell itself?? At first i thought it might be a limitation of sorts, like maybe i was exporting too much text in the field.
